Functional Capacity Assessments

Functional Capacity Assessments

A Functional Capacity Evaluation or FCE can be undertaken as an assessment of a person’s physical capability and can be utilised in several ways. It involves the participant engaging in a series of physical assessments of strength and fitness, their output is recorded on a computerised system, manual handling techniques observed and, if necessary, corrected and feedback is sought from participants as to any pain or discomfort felt.

The physical assessments are designed so that the participant works within their limits and to a level that is commensurate with the physical demands of their employment. A FCE includes the initial assessment appointment and a follow-up interview two days later to review any post-assessment physiological response and a comprehensive written report to all stakeholders.

For an injured worker a targeted or specific FCE may be undertaken, looking specifically at the part or parts of the body affected by the injury. It can be used to determine whether or not they are capable of performing their pre-injury duties or any other available duties within an organisation by reviewing the physical demands of them as identified in either the Job Analysis or Job Dictionary respectively.

Alternatively, it may be more relevant for the injured worker to undertake a full FCE which assesses all functional aspects including bending, squatting, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, grip strength, pinch grip strength, aerobic capacity and functional range of motion.

They can be utilised as a pre-employment assessment to ensure that any potential employees have the physical attributes required to undertake the role for which they are being considered without significant risk of injury.

Pre-employment functional testing

The perfect way to reduce your risk when recruiting for any position, our Pre-Employment Musculo-Skeletal & Functional Assessment is able to be tailored to the demands of the role for which they are being considered and accordingly may be structured as a 30, 45 or 60 minute assessment. The pre-employment assessment will provide advice on the candidate’s ability to safely manage the physical requirements of the role for which they are being considered including general fitness, observation and education in regard to manual handling techniques.

A comprehensive written report includes advice on any identified risks and ways in which these can be overcome or reduced.
